VIRTUAL REALITY THERAPY
We now offer Virtual Reality Therapy, when judged by the client’s therapist to be appropriate, for a number of presenting problems. We most commonly use VRT, when client’s are comfortable with this method of treatment, for anxiety disorders, trauma, PTSD, and specific phobias (such as flying, driving, dental procedures, dogs, insects, snakes, blood, needles, MRI, heights, bridges, darkness, public speaking, social phobias, test anxiety, claustrophobia, agoraphobia, etc). VRT can also be effectively used in skills development for relapse prevention, handling bullying problems, relaxation, mindfulness, and developing a multitude of useful skills. Virtual reality is a tool, not a treatment. All use of this tool will be in the context of psychotherapy/counseling with a therapist trained in the treatment of mental health disorders as well as in the use of VRT.
MEDICATION MANAGEMENT REFERRALS
When deemed appropriate, your counselor will make a referral for medication management. Our counselors have several local psychiatrists whom we work with to prescribe psychotropic medication, if needed, for our patients. In some cases, we also consult with a patient's primary care physician, OB/GYN or pediatrician.
HOW LONG DOES COUNSELING LAST?
The length of counseling is ultimately the choice of the client. Some people feel they have accomplished what they needed and are feeling better after only several sessions. Most typically, clients will remain in counseling for 12 to 16 sessions. Sometimes clients need a longer time to complete their goals. The length of your counseling will be affected by factors such as: the type and severity of the problem you are experiencing, how long this problem has been in existence, your own personality, and your capacity and willingness to change.
Under Florida Statute, information you discuss during counseling will generally be kept strictly confidential. Exceptions may arise if you threaten yourself or others, if a court of law issues a legitimate subpoena or if you are in treatment or are being tested by order of a court of law.
