Telehealth/Remote Sessions

TELEHEALTH

Bringing our services directly to you.

WHY TELEHEALTH?

The Covid-19 pandemic has increased stress for virtually all of us, thus increasing the need for emotional/behavioral health services to help cope through this difficult time. Telehealth allows us to bring services to you, keep you safe, and make counseling easier to access than ever.

WHAT IS TELEHEALTH?

Telehealth is simply use of digital communication, such as computers and mobile devicessuch as a smart phone or tablet, to access your counselor remotely. This technology can be used from your home, office or any setting of your choice which gives you the quiet and privacy to feel at ease. Telehealth typically includes using both audio and video communication, although some insurances (such as Medicare) are allowing for services by simple phone alone.

DOES IT WORK?

Whether telehealth is optimal for a particular patient or their specific presenting problems may vary. However, recent research has shown that in general, teletherapy services are as effective as in-person care (Hilty, Yellowlees, Parrish, & Chan, 2015). Our patients and therapists have been quite pleased with the effectiveness, convenience, and safety of telehealth. One of the best ways to determine if telehealth will work for you may be to simply try it and see.

IF I AM NOT TECHY, WILL TELEHEALTH BE TOO HARD FOR ME?

If you are an existing patient, we are happy to assist you with transferring to remote / telehealth sessions. If you are new to our office, it is a great time to start. We are accepting new patients, and our support staff will walk you through getting set up for remote services, as much as needed, until you are all set for and comfortable with remote services. We will continue to assist you, throughout your care with us, should you experience technical difficulties with telehealth services.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

During the Covid-19 pandemic, HIPPA regulations have allowed healthcare providers to provide telehealth using platforms such as FaceTime (for Apple products such as iPhones or iPads) or Google Duo (for Android products). Many devices come with these programs already installed. We also offer services through the HIPPA compliant platform, DoxyMe. If needed, our staff will walk you through how to download the “app” to use for telehealth. While this may sound complicated, with the help of a knowledgeable staff member to assist, to date every patient we have worked with has been able to use telehealth. If you prefer to simply receive services through an “old fashioned” phone call, some insurance (such as Medicare) are allowing/reimbursing for this.

SOME ADVANTAGES OF TELEHEALTH

With telehealth, we can bring services directly to you – in any quiet, private, non-distracting environment of your choosing. In addition to helping keep you safe from Covid-19, this flexibility allows you to receive services in situations which might otherwise make services quite difficult, for example:

-You have no time to commute to our office.

-Your babysitter is late or ill.

-You are ill/injured but would still like the support of your counselor.

-You are experiencing car problems or have no transportation to our office.

-You simply do not feel up to traveling.

Unlike other types of healthcare services, counseling may not be as conducive to wearing a mask, due to both the length of the appointment and the personal nature of a service in which we all rely on facial/nonverbal cues. Telehealth allows us to be “up close and personal”, but remotely.

WILL MY INSURANCE PAY FOR TELEHEALTH?

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the vast majority of insurances have recognized the importance of using telehealth for both convenience and keeping patients safe. Thus, they are reimbursing for telehealth and sometimes even telephone services. Just call our office and our support staff can determine if your insurance will cover these services.

WHAT ABOUT AFTER COVID-19 IS OVER?

Our patients have enjoyed the flexibility of telehealth to such a great extent that, as long as health insurance carriers will continue to reimburse for these services, we will be glad to continue offering telehealth – at least for times when this mode of care is appropriate and patients prefer this type of session.
